Nuceiva vs. Botox: What’s the Difference Between These Botulinum Toxins?

By Dr. Meg Minasian, Founder of The MW Clinic London

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) has long been a mainstay in aesthetic medicine, helping to soften dynamic lines and restore balance to facial expressions. With the recent introduction of Nuceiva in the UK, many patients are now asking how it compares to the more established Botox®.

At The MW Clinic London, I work with both Botox and Nuceiva, and I tailor each recommendation based on your medical history, goals, and aesthetic preferences. Here’s a helpful breakdown of how these two products compare — and what it might mean for your treatment.

What Are Nuceiva and Botox?

Both Botox and Nuceiva are prescription medicines containing botulinum toxin type A. They work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to specific facial muscles, reducing the appearance of dynamic lines affecting the frown and forehead.

Botox® (by Allergan) has been used for over 30 years, while Nuceiva (developed by Evolus) has recently entered the UK market following widespread use in Korea, North America and Europe under the name Jeuveau®.

What’s the Main Difference?

While their core mechanism of action is the same, the differences between Nuceiva and Botox lie in:

  • Manufacturing processes
  • Protein composition
  • Consistency of effectiveness
  • Clinical onset and duration of effect
  • Patient experience and aesthetic benefits

Nuceiva is produced using a proprietary purification process utilising a stabilising peptide that removes unnecessary accessory proteins. This gives it a highly pure, tightly focused formulation, which leads to a more rapid onset of effect and consistent often increased duration of action.

Onset and Duration

Clinical data suggests that Nuceiva may offer a more rapid onset, with patients noticing softening effects within 2–3 days — though full results still take 1–2 weeks. Duration is comparable to Botox, with effects typically lasting around 3–4 months, depending on the individual.

In practice, both products are usually very effective — but some patients report a preference for Nuceiva.

Safety and Effectiveness

Both Botox and Nuceiva are licensed, regulated, and clinically proven treatments. They have undergone extensive safety trials and are approved by the UK’s MHRA and the European Medicines Agency (EMA). When used appropriately by an experienced medical professional, they are both considered safe and effective.

Choosing the Right Product for You

The right choice depends on:

  • Your individual anatomy and muscle strength
  • Your treatment goals (e.g. line softening vs. lifting)
  • Any previous experience with other botulinum toxins
  • Your preferences for onset, feel, or duration

As part of your consultation at The MW Clinic London, I will guide you through the options and explain why one formulation may be more suitable than another for your needs.

Why I Offer Both at The MW Clinic

At my clinic, currently I work with two botulinum toxin type A formulations: Botox® and Nuceiva. I have selected these based on their clinical reliability, safety, and the consistent, natural-looking results they deliver. Having both options allows me to tailor treatment based on your individual anatomy, preferences, and goals — with no commercial bias. Each decision is based on medical reasoning and your best outcome.

If you’re curious about how Nuceiva compares to Botox, or you’d like to explore which option might best suit your needs, I’d be delighted to see you in clinic for a full medical consultation.
