Dissecting cellulitis

- Dissecting cellulitis is a rare but severe type of scalp inflammation that affects the hair follicles. It mostly affects young adult men of African descent, but it can also affect people of other races and both genders. The condition presents itself as tender, boggy nodules that form abscesses that burst and release pus, which can leave scars.
- The exact cause of dissecting cellulitis is unknown, but it is believed to be related to genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalances, bacterial infections, and immune system dysregulation. It has also been associated with other conditions, such as acne conglobata, hidradenitis suppurativa, and pilonidal cysts.
- Diagnosis is usually made by clinical examination and biopsy, as the symptoms of dissecting cellulitis can be similar to those of other scalp conditions, such as folliculitis and acne keloidalis nuchae. Early diagnosis is crucial in managing the condition and preventing further scarring and hair loss.
- The treatment of dissecting cellulitis requires a multidisciplinary approach involving dermatologists, trichologists, and other specialists. Treatment options include oral antibiotics, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants to control inflammation and infection. In severe cases, surgical excision may be required to remove the affected tissue.
- Unfortunately, the success of treatment for dissecting cellulitis is variable, and many patients may experience relapses or persistent symptoms. Close monitoring and regular follow-up appointments with a dermatologist or trichologist are essential to manage the condition effectively and prevent further complications.
